LANGUAGE LOSS

This is a serious issue oh. Some languages are being lost.

I am Igbo by tribe and my language is one of the languages that is fazing out. English has replaced mother tongue

I remember growing up, there were times my father would put us under a ban of not speaking English and am telling you that for the whole day there would be no speaking. It was not a funny experience.

I can speak my language, precisely my dialet but to be sincere I am most comfortable with English.

Learning other languages has been such a herculean task for me and I just hope to learn at least, if not comprehend something.

I lived in Lagos as a child, was learning little french but after moving to the north,Β  I lost that. Even the Yoruba, I don’t know. Hausa,Β  I am trying to comprehend it as my roommates keep speaking it.

My father is the most fluent speaker in my home. He can actually speak more languages and is very quick to learn(brain oh! Be like father πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚)

For the Yoruba and Hausa, they speak their languages very well and so that threat is not maybe at them. Nupe, Idoma and some other tribes still adhere a lot to speaking their languages.

I love my language a lot, it is very beautiful, especially my dialet. Good enough I had studied Igbo in secondary school which at least has helped me to read and understand Igbo literature.

Not only in Nigeria but I believe in other parts of the world, some indigenous languages are lost.

Inter marriages has also added to this especially if the couples can’t speak their language and that is why some tribe insist on marrying within even though that has not solved the issue.

Well I believe if we see this as a serious issue, we will try and guide our mother tongues. Inter marriage will not affect it if couples put effort to ensure their children learn the language. Also language learning should be encouraged at the early years of a child as their brains are still tender and the hippocampus and learning areas can still consolidate faster.

Schools can also help with this. Let me say a little about my school in Lagos. It had days for speaking French, like the assembly was in French. There were even excursion to french speaking countries, if I had continued in that pattern I would have been far better in that language.

Let me end on this note. Don’t disassociate yourself from your culture, especially the healthy practices.

Me will keep trying my best

N. B I love those Igbo songs oh. If you know, you know πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚
