Beautiful Hands (Henna Art)

Preamble

It has been interesting coming up with topics in between Cavewoman.

Today’s topic is more cultural, and I will not dive into it excessively.

It is going in line with the tone in Cavewoman 3 (The previous post)

Henna

Culled from the internet

Henna also known as Mehndi is a dye prepared from the plant Lawsonia Inermis.

It is greenish in colour and has tobe prepared by first drying and grinding it dry. Afterwards, water is added and additional lime, sugar or oil (especially the eucalyptus oil) to increase the intensity of the colour.

It is popularly used to dye the hands and legs but can also be used to dye the hair.

It can be black or red but the red is more preferred because of its attractive appearance.

One of the most popular brand in Sudan. Culled from the internet

I also observed an alternative by watching multiple Korean series 🙈. That is the Balsam flower. Its colour is similar to the red henna and is applied by crushing the leaves to paint the hands and nails.

The Art of Painting

Painting of hands is an old tradition and some of these evidences can be seen in archaeological sites where hand prints were left as memories.

It is a way to leave marks of your individuality in an area until the paint wears off or the paint is replaced.

Culturally it is significant Asian, Middle Eastern and Northern African countries. It is a of way of life of these people and plays a huge role in celeberations.

In Sudan, Ethiopia and Somalia, the males paint their hands during weddings either because they are related to the bridegroom or they are bridegroom themselves.

(Honestly, the first time I observed it, I was super surprised 😁)

In Sudan

For the females, only the married ones are allowed to cover their hands in paint especially with the red henna. The single ladies can only draw patterns with the black henna and paint their nails with it.

Once a woman is sighted with red henna on her tips and palms, it is immediately assumed that she is married.

In Nigeria

Males do not paint her hands with henna and the usuage is not limited to only married people, single women can paint with any they chose to.

My experiment with it

I am familiar with Henna art but I never tried it until I moved to my current location. I was hesitant at first but finally tried it about three times.

The last time I tried, it turned out to be the most beautiful. It coloured my finger tips well.

In this blog post, I am simply using henna as an illustration to drive to a point.

Lets ride in 🚤.

What do you do with your hands?

I have an internal belief that everyone has the ability to do something, no matter how simple it may be.

The ability to be creative differs but it is inherent in everyone.

There is something good you can do.

O. R. A

Henna painting also serves as a way to create memories and in analysing how the dye deepened on my fingers, I will correlate with the strenght of memories and the ability to do something.

The first hour after I had applied it

Creating memories is often done within a period of time. It ranges from minutes to hours, to days to years. It also depends on who you are creating the memories with and if the person is one who still retains their position in your life after years must have passed, then the memories created bears a deeper significance.

More than an hour afterwards
Overnight
Days after
Amazing 😌

I really loved this tint

The Sun always does a good job ❤

As the days progressed the tint of the henna deepened. As we progress in life and create memories with those we cherish, the dept of our love for them deepens.

Memories begets memories
O.R.A🌻

Lest I focus too much on memories, in line with the previous post (Cavewoman 3), there is something to do while you still breathe.

I know many of us are trying our best. We are trying hard even when it does not seem like our efforts are valid.

I really get you

But the truth is: While you are alive, this is your opportunity to do something worthwhile.

And if you have hands, it is your opportunity to do something with it.

I have thought about it several times, there are many creative things to do with the hands that are simply therapeutic and essential.

For example : Cooking, knitting, cleaning, painting, sewing, drawing, kneading and baking, typing, writing, driving, patting on the back as a means of emotional support, clapping to cheer someone and….. (add your in the comment section)

The truth is that you may not be profesional in any of them or even the best but at least you are able to do something good.

I try at cooking, crotcheting, baking, sewing, painting, typing, writing, cleaning, braiding my hair, I pat on the back at emergency moments 🙂, and clap when necessary etc.

I won’t lie, I cannot say I am very good at any but I try.

Try

Some months after

The dye was fading but even though faint, it left traces that were still beautiful to behold. Memories may fade but if they were good enough, they will leave a mark that won’t fade.

I have personal reservations on making memories and maybe it is too idealistic and unrealistic but I love to create memories with people that won’t fade.

I love to create memories with people that won’t change negatively.

I want to create memories with peope that won’t become peope I do not want to relate with again.

I know my criteria is unrealistic but I am trying to be sincere with every memory I make so when I look back, I am comfortable my sincerity in the captured memory.

Taking you back to doing something with your hands, it reminds me of this verse

Ecclesiastes 9:10 Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest. (KJV)

God wants us to be useful with our lives.

Our hands should not be ones that shed blood nor ones that plan the harm of another person.

They should not be used to hurt another or steal or cheat/defraud.

They should be hands that blesses others.

That comforts others and cheer others.

Most importantly, they should be hands that pray and praise.

Proverbs 12:14 A man shall be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth: and the recompense of a man's hands shall be rendered unto him. (KJV)

You know, what you do with your hands is very important and if you did not know, this post is a reminder.

It took Covid 19 for many people to start washing their hands regularly, even though this should be a normal helathy routine.

I hope you have not stopped though 😏

And to end today’s post, I want to remind you that I write and create arts.

Why did you come here?🤔

Preamble

This topic compliments the previous post.

That is Cavewoman 2

Favourite question

An afternoon sky

I cannot count the number of times I have been asked:

“Why did you come to Sudan?”

Those who have asked cannot seem to understand why a person like me would come to a place like this.

My intial response used to be “Because my father (earthly) sent me here”.

However, as I have spent years here with all the things that have unravelled in my life, my response has changed.

A person like me

I am a Christian, and an Igbo, a combination that is not expected to be found in a muslim dominated country.

I wondered why people found it strange that a person like me would be in this country.

Why?

Why did my religion and culture mean so much?

That is a rhetorical question.

My response has always been “Because I am a human being and I should be able to live anywhere”

I know that response is not very valid even though it should be.

With the huge prejudice against Sudan, living here as a Christian foreigner has not felt too alien to me, maybe because I merged with the society easily and did not find it hard appearing like one of them.

In the form of wearing scarves and covering my body appropriately.

This is a normal appearance for me here

Why?

This is a story that would probably be shared appropriately in a proper context but for the sake of this post, I will share a little.

Before coming to this land, I made a prayer to God and I did not know He would answer me exactly. When the answer came, I accepted it with my whole heart.

I knew it was His answer but I was not completely prepared for the journey.

God prepared me along the line.

Feet and socks of mine 😁

Process

Through out the years I have lived in this land, a lot has been shed from my life, a lot has been planted and more has grown. I have been watered and fed and had experiences that are perculiar.

My faith has grown and I have understood purpose more.

I have had loss, shed tears, experienced confusion, pain and disappointments.

However, these experiences have been a fertile ground for God.

And He is still working

Another thing is, because I was not prepared, I who thought I had accepetd God’s will fully had limited the place He put me in.

I limited the land and in my mind categorized it as a dry land without an oasis. I had allowed that limitation affect growth I would have experienced earlier.

A popular sight

It took me almost all of the years I have spent here to realise my errors.

It reminds me of this verse

Psalms 63:1
O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is;(KJV)

I had focused on the dryness I had seen rather than on God who was able to show me where water was.

As Hagar was shown (Genesis 21:15-19)

Psalms 107:35
He turneth the wilderness into a standing water, and dry ground into watersprings.
(KJV)

God called Abram and renamed him Abraham. Abraham was called to move into the land of the unknown, a land that was filled with sand; a desert. In faith Abraham moved and God blessed the land which was a desert and turned it to a fruitful land.

When God says move, we move and it is Him that would bless our obedience.

O. R. A

Why did you come here?

Another group of people now ask me this question.

The people of the land.

It is now their favourite question.

Why did you come to our country?

Why they ask?

…………..

My answer now is “Because God wanted me here”

And yes, that is that is why.

God wanted me here at this time, at this moment regardless of everything that has happened, I am here for a purpose.

As God leads

Part of the Nile river in Khartoum

As God leads, we follow and as we follow, we trust His guidance.

We need not limit ourselves nor our environment because it is The LORD that leads.

Deuteronomy 31:8 And the LORD, He it is that doth go before thee; He will be with thee, He will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed. (KJV)

I am grateful that regardless of my omissions, God has patiently given me opportunities to rethink of my decisions and mindset, and for future purposes in another land where He leads me, I should do better.

As Cavewoman continues, it is important to note that I am still shelling and this series is a glimpse of the things that are transforming in my life.

Through out this period of time, I have tried to capture moments as much as I could and you can find more on my Instagram page at onyirose12

There is a podcast that compliments this post.

ENGAGING CULTURE on RoseCast

Do not forget the Podcast page on this blog too. You can listen to latest podcasts through this page.

Take home

Why are you where you are?

Did God lead you there?

Did God take you there?

These questions need answers.

You need to know the answers

I am where God wants me to be and that is why I am where I am, regardless of all that has happened.

Y. O. L. O✌

Preamble

I said somewhere that ✌ is my currently most popular emoji..

This may not be your first time encountering this eponym but today, I”ll share my view.

Emojis are my thing.

You only live

Or?

Leave.

So many people are alive but are not living.

They are already numb to the aesthetics of their environment.

Once

I will say twice.

Once before death. Twice after death

Things to be done

It is beautiful how topics for January are co-related.

This topic goes in line with Procastination, the second topic for this year.

There are things you need to do, have to do, and want to do but you are not doing them…..

Scratch that

There are things you are supposed to do

Don’t scratch anything. Unscratch the scratched one. I am still saying the same thing

You are not doing them because you think you have time

But time does not have you

Thrills. Adventures.

Do you like exploring?

Or

Do you love routine?

Or

Do you love what you want depending on spontaneous emotions?

Or

No other options available

What adventure have you been wanting to do?

Y.O.L.O so….

Live now.

Do it right.

Live right.

Have sight.

Make impact.

Stand right.

Take strides.

Fight right.

This was taken from inside a moving vehicle on the streets of Khartoum. There are more beautiful paintings like this and I finally took this one after several encounters with it

Y.o.l.o so

Have sense, common sense.

Understand yourself.

Know why you are existing.

Be intentional.

Eat right.

Let go of bad habits.

Love truely.

Embrace love.

Have hope.

Cherish faith.

Y.ol.o so

Dance.

Take that photograph.

Eat that food.

Do that plan.

Sing that song.

Take good naps.

Y.ol.o so

Love God

Psalms 90:12 So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.

King James Version

I know that Y.OL.O is mostly used to encourage crazy behaviours or adventures but I have taken it to mean : Doing life the right and healthy way without regrets at the end of the day.

What it mean for you?

January has 31 days….

SILENCE

I love to think

I love silence

Not just the absence of general noise,  I usually don’t mind. I love silence around me.

What in the world do I mean? 🤔(emojis are back 😁)

I mean,  I love when am sometimes and sometimes, most times left alone to just think and have my imaginative moment. I could sometimes be hyper than usual and get around being so jovial and all those very nice things (hope you understand 😂😂). But majority of the time,  I love to just sit quietly and if probably wonder why the Sun is yellow 😂🙄

I love to think about food.  I think of all the amazing neo meals I could come up with.  I think of that everyday especially when the teacher has been trained in boringology 😂😂.

I love to think about life,  maturity,  creativity, plans, relationships, weddings, favourite movies (mostly the teary parts 😂😭) and…. ..

The silence I love the most,  is the silence that is present when I am in a moving bus, and my head is out of the window and the wind is soothing my scalp and face. The view outside, beautiful or not. The diverse people, the diverse activity,  the ugly and beautiful,  the dirt and wares, the river and trees,  the cars and cycles and most probably with an earpiece playing my favourites… 🎵🎶🎧🎼

I love that in that moment, I can just have a fresh breath of moment without focusing on a particular being…

In these moments.

What I treasure the most is talking to God in my heart. Asking Him questions, reviewing His word and sorting my heart❤❤

In silence,  I think of my past actions, my replies and behaviour. I think of others and how it could be better. I think of the filter,  the filter that keeps me in check. .. Cycle and all…..

I think of my big books, lecture notes,  textbook and covering up.  I think of being better, of writing, of typing,  of fiction, non fiction.

I think of being more meaningful to myself and adding value to others.

I think of Family and all I love so dear💕💞

I think of past sweet memories, of past friends and budding friendships.

I think of future friends,  the ones I probaly haven’t met.  I think of those who make me smile and those who add more value to my life 😊🤗

I treasure silent moments and would love to have them all captured 😊💞

I love the moments only my eyes capture and the silent and gentle smiles they bring.. .

And I love when am not interrupted… 😇😇

IMG-20181024-WA0000

Hope you have your silent moments too… 😇😇

N. B Was taken by a very warm amazing classmate.  She captured the moment (without my knowledge 🙈) and to think I had imagined it!! 😇😘
